Recall timeline

We share the same simple hope: more years together with the dogs we love. We’ve always said we put dogs first, but saying it is the easy part. Values mean very little when everything is plain sailing. The true test is if you can live by those values when times are hard, and doing the right things costs you something.

To every dog living with sudden bilateral dry eye, and every owner caring for them through it: we are doing everything we can to stand alongside you. There is still more to do, and we won’t stop, whether that’s supporting you and your dog or pushing the research forward until there are answers.

Timeline

17th August 2026

Voluntary recall of all Years fresh meals. Out of an abundance of caution, we recalled every Years fresh meal. We did this without any scientific evidence, and despite veterinary advice that a recall wasn’t necessary, because putting dogs first meant not waiting for certainty.

18th August 2026

Refunds for customers. A dedicated  customer support team was set up to refund customers affected by the recall quickly, with an additional refund to support dogs that may have dry eye.

1st September 2026

No-cost Veterinary Ophthalmologist consultations
alongside consultations with RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Clinical Nutrition, a veterinary nurse and a canine behaviourist.

Ophthalmology consultations are led by David Williams, Veterinary Ophthalmologist and PhD in Ocular Immunology, Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, University of Cambridge.

2nd September 2026

No-cost veterinary consultations, 24/7. Free video consultations with RCVS-registered veterinary surgeons, plus free 24/7 video messaging with an RCVS emergency vet.

Mental health support. Free, confidential mental health support for all customers through Health Assured.

22nd September 2026

Investigation report published. Extensive independent testing, 21,757 individual test results across 1,129 distinct substances, found no evidence of contamination, toxins or safety issues in Years food, and identified no link to the reported cases of sudden bilateral dry eye.

24th September 2026

No-cost prescription service. A free prescription service for all customers, so treatment can be prescribed without an extra vet bill.

25th September 2026

Lower-cost eye medicines. Access to discounted online pharmacies for eye medication, available in every customer’s Years account.

Sudden bilateral dry eye community launched. Years was built on community, and we’ve seen first-hand how powerful it can be. We believe working together is the best way to find answers.

4th October 2026

Research & Support Programme launched. Our investigation results shouldn’t stop us supporting owners and dogs when they need it most. The programme covers past vet costs and contributes towards potential future treatment.

5th October 2026

Lacrimal tissue study announced. A histopathological study of lacrimal (tear gland) tissue to help find the underlying cause, led by David Williams, Veterinary Ophthalmologist and PhD in Ocular Immunology, Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, University of Cambridge.

7th October 2026

Second ophthalmologist added. Further free ophthalmology video consultations with Dr Amy Andrews, European Specialist in Veterinary Ophthalmology.

14th October 2026

First support payments reach customers. Ten days after the programme opened, the first payments are arriving with customers.

15th October 2026

Hundreds of dog owners have asked for support. Payments are going out, and dogs and their owners are being supported through this.

What we know

  • 21,757 individual tests found no contamination, toxin or safety issue in years food
  • Sudden bilateral dry eye is occurring in dogs not fed Years
  • Buckwheat has emerged as a potential common factor, affecting some dogs
  • Years is one of multiple companies with cases, but is the only company to issue a recall

What we don't know

These are the questions that matter most, and no single company, vet or researcher
can answer them alone.

  • What is causing the wider increase in sudden bilateral dry eye cases?
  • What explains the number of Years fed dogs amongst the cases?
  • Why are there cases appearing in different countries?
  • What food(s) are the non-Years cases eating?

Ivan Barashki & Darren Beale Co-Founders of Years

“We won’t stop. We’ll keep trying to support dogs and their owners and keep pushing the research forward until we understand what is causing the rise in sudden bilateral dry eye both in the UK and internationally.”
