Dog-friendly fried chicken

Fried chicken from KFC, chicken shop or chippy is a delicious treat for us but it’s not safe for our furry friends.

Although chicken is a fantastic protein source for dogs, the added seasonings, salt and oils mean that fried chicken could potentially give your pooch an upset stomach – or even lead to more serious, longer term health conditions, like heart disease.

We’ve put together this dog-friendly recipe so your dog doesn’t have to miss out on the fun!

Ingredients You'll Need

  • 1 boneless, skinless chicken breast
  • 1/2 cup oat flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 end of a Yak chew
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened plain yoghurt
  • 1 small handful spinach
  • 1 sweet potato
  • 1 sprinkle of Year’s Taste+ Liver and Smoked Red Pepper

Step-by-Step Instructions

Here's how to make the dog-friendly KFC-inspired chicken and chips:

Step 1 - Make your batter

In a mixing bowl, mix the oat flour with the egg and beat until smooth. Add in a good sprinkle of Year’s Taste+ Liver and Smoked Red Pepper to give it some extra flavour.

Step 2 - ‘Bread’ your chicken

Cut your chicken breast into chicken goujons. To make the dog-friendly breadcrumbs, soak the end of the Yak chew in water for about 5 minutes and then pop into the microwave for 45 seconds until it’s puffed and crispy. Follow our video guide here!

Blend the puffed Yak until smooth and tip into a bowl. Dip the chicken into the batter and then into the ‘breadcrumbs’ to fully coat it. Air fry at 200°C for 8-12 minutes until cooked through.

Step 3 - Make the fries

Cut the sweet potato into fries and air fry at 180°C for 12-15 minutes until cooked through.

Step 4 - Make it saucy

Chop the spinach and mix with the yoghurt in a small bowl.

Step 5 - Serve

Once everything has cooled down, serve the chicken, fries and sauce to your dog and watch them enjoy!
